‘One man’s trash is another man’s treasure’:

MKT PLC explores the highs and lows of buying and selling on online marketplaces, considering it primarily as an opportunity for transformation. The exhibiting artists were challenged to make their work from trades or transactions, images or ideas, originating from this preloved goldmine.

The MKT PLC exhibition positions itself in contrast to the market-driven atmospheres of mega-budget art fairs, a parody of VIP openings and high production costs.

The buying and trading of used items on these platforms also sets up weird side quests, endless uncertain experiences, and frames a dialogue about humanity’s obsession with other people’s alternately precious treasure or unwanted sh*t. There are personal connections to be made using second-hand market platforms, risks and challenges, benefits and surprises, and good old fashioned market place madness. MKT PLC prompts us to consider social structures, global networks of supply and disposal, and the wasted run-off of over-consumption.

The project takes the form of an evolving exhibition, with the selected artists showing a range of sculpture, mixed media and performance art—spilling out of a traditional market stall.

To root the exhibition in “bazaar” encounters, during the exhibition dates will include free participatory workshops, subsequently adding collaborative creations to the marketplace installation.
